US PERFORMING ARTS CAMP - austin , TX

Commentry for the above Art:[ Total Postings : 1 ]
US Performing arts camp is pathetic (review)
I am a 15 year old who attended the US performing arts camp in austin, texas. It was a waste of time. I went in expecting a college level acting curriculim and instead was presented with material a kindergardener could have mastered. For example practicing tongue twisters for two hours. That's when I should have turned around, because next up was sitting quietly in a desk for 2 and a half hours waiting for a 2 minute on camera interview which was to be critiqued. Instead what happened was by the time my critique was due we had already rolled well through our break and the next class was begining, so suprise suprise, we fast-forwarded through it and I got an obviously b.s.'d line about how expressive my eyes were. The comic relief of the class was that my mentor fell asleep. Then, I truged along to my next class which was okay...but only because I like writing. It was a class where we wrote for two hours. My mentor fell asleep in the back again. Last class of the day was movement, where before they even judged my skill level, informed me that I would be performing behind my fellow actors, doing some sort of "movement" because of age. However, not to fret, I would be working the camera sometimes! I paid for the same experience that 16 and 17 year olds did, but I was prevented from benefitting as much as they were. At the end of the day we had to be in our rooms at nine, with no entertainment but to think about the wonderful day we had just experienced. This camp was a detention center, even on breaks we werent allowed outside the building! Much to the suprise of the camp organizer I left after the first day, why waste my time?! When the camp organizer was questioned about the 2 hour wait for a 2 minute interview her response was "Well, we are trying to give them a real world experience, and there is alot of waiting around in acting." Another pathetic response she gave to the lack of exercise opportunity (I wasnt allowed access to a gym, and all I was allowed to do on breaks was eat) and the strict prison-like detention to the the dorm was "It was hot outside!" If you are thinking about going to or sending your young actor to this camp, put your wallet back in your pocket and run!
