STANDARDIZED TESTS - Chicago , IL

Should be used more frequently to measure progress
Commentry on the above High School :
I know, I've heard the blah blah blah about standardized tests, "they don't measure real learning, they are culturally biased, and they only encourage teaching how to do well on the test". That is just HORSESHIT! Everyone has taken standardized tests. We all know that these tests typically ask us to read some text (specific text that we have never seen before) and then answer questions showing how well we comprehend what we read. The tests also typically give us addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems (specific problems that we have never seen before) and test our ability to solve the equations . . . and (God forbid) maybe a math "word problem" or two might be included. What horror! Imagine that, expecting a test taker to show their competency in basic reading and math skills. How is that not testing for real knowledge? How is that biased? How does that promote teaching only how to do well on a test? Remember, no one sees ahead of time the text or the math problems that are on the test. In order to teach someone only how to do well on that type of test, one must teach basic reading comprehension skills and basic math skills. How terrible, how terrible, how terrible! Obviously, standardized tests are actually a superb tool to measure student ability and educational effectiveness at all levels, and teachers who criticize standardized testing are simply trying to protect their own poor performance and incompetence.
