UN SECURITY GENERAL

  The new Secretary General
Commentry on the above Issue :
While the consensus seems to be (at least based on reports in the Asian media) that the next secretary general of the UN has to be from Asia, there certainly doesn't seem to be any consensus as to where exactly the secretary general should be from. In India there is quite a buzz (very typical) about the candidature of Shashi Tharoor, a suave and extremely articulate diplomat, whose credentials to head the world body are quite impeccable. A multi-faceted personality, who talks as well as he writes, he has been with the UN for almost two decades, and thereby knows the organization inside out. Having held challenging positions within the UN with considerable amount of success, his experience will certainly be immensely valuable in taking this organization -- which has its own share of doubters and critics-- forward. Ironically, the fact that he is from India--- which is slowly (painfully slowly, in fact) getting the attention and respect of the international community-- could turn out to be a boon or a curse for his candidature. Electing him might seem logically to be an acknowledgement of the role that India has in international politics and diplomacy in the 21st century; at the same time, India's atttempts to garner a permanent seat in the security council, coupled with the notion that UN Secretary Generals do not (or should not?) be from large /powerful countries, could well hamper his prospects. If only the two issues could be separated... and the candidature viewed only on merit of the candidate, things could be a lot different. Alas, international politics and diplomacy often works differently.

The title should actually read "UN Secretary General" and not UN Security General.
